Disaster fears as hackers tackle technology in cars

Hackers are turning their attention to entertainment systems, GPS units and electronic stability controls, and tracking drivers' movements and personal details. They could even cause an accident by nobbling safety features.

A report, Caution: Malware Ahead, found tech-savvy criminals could:

REMOTELY unlock and start a vehicle with a mobile phone.

DISABLE a car remotely.

TRACK a driver's location, activities and routines.

STEAL personal data from wireless Bluetooth systems.

DISRUPT GPS navigation systems.

DISABLE emergency assistance.

Researchers said embedded devices with computer chips were used in almost all areas of cars, including air bags, radios, power seats, anti-lock braking systems, electronic stability controls, cruise control and communication systems. The report, by anti-virus company McAfee and vehicle software company Wind River, said researchers had demonstrated critical safety components could be hacked if crooks gained access to electronic components or wireless emissions.
"Having your car hacked could translate to dire risks to your personal safety."
